What's wrong with DOUBLE-U ?
- The letter DOUBLE-U has three syllables in its name. This is too many. Every other letter in the English alphabet has only one!
- The advent of the world wide web has made the above fact painfully evident, with the common use of the acronym, WWW. The extreme syllabic inefficiency of this acronym is evidenced by the emergence of several phonetic bastardizations such as, "Dubya-Dubya-Dubya."
- Consider the “false economy” gained by the spoken* use of certain acronyms containing one or more instance of the letter DOUBLE-U :
* Note that the written form of these acronyms are still useful as abbreviations regardless of their pronunciation, and some of the acronyms are written more often than spoken. On the other hand, we might be more likely to say them aloud if they contained fewer syllables.
